On September 20, 1918, while praying before a crucifix, Padre Pio received the stigmata - the five wounds of Christ. He bore these painful wounds for 50 years until his death. Through his stigmata, he was intimately united with Christ's passion and offered his sufferings for the salvation of souls.

St. Padre Pio spent up to 15 hours a day hearing confessions. He had the gift of reading souls and would sometimes reveal sins that penitents had forgotten or concealed.
