For God's Mercy on the Souls
Sign of the Cross
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Our Father
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Hail Mary
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Meditation
O Lord, because it has been decreed that whoever dieth with a venial sin, or the guilt of mortal sin forgiven but with the temporal punishment due, must expiate their offenses before obtaining the Beatific Vision—we implore Your mercy.
I have often deserved to be in that state of painful punishment. I have often committed sins that merit not only Purgatory but Hell itself. Yet, through Your mercy, I am still alive and have time to repent.
Prayer
O my God, I am heartily sorry that I have ever offended You, and I firmly resolve never to offend You again. I pray for all the souls in Purgatory, especially for those who are most abandoned and have no one to pray for them.
O God, the Creator and Redeemer of all the faithful, grant to the souls of Your servants departed the remission of all their sins, that through pious supplications they may obtain the pardon which they have always desired. You who live and reign, world without end. Amen.
Prayer to Our Suffering Savior for the Holy Souls
O most sweet Jesus, through the bloody sweat which You suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane, have mercy on these Blessed Souls. Have mercy on them. R. Have mercy on them, O Lord.
O most sweet Jesus, through the pains which You suffered during Your most cruel scourging, have mercy on them. R. Have mercy on them, O Lord.
O most sweet Jesus, through the pains which You suffered in Your most sorrowful crowning with thorns, have mercy on them. R. Have mercy on them, O Lord.
O most sweet Jesus, through the pains which You suffered in carrying Your cross to Calvary, have mercy on them. R. Have mercy on them, O Lord.
O most sweet Jesus, through the pains which You suffered during Your most cruel Crucifixion, have mercy on them. R. Have mercy on them, O Lord.
O most sweet Jesus, through the pains which You suffered in Your most bitter agony on the Cross, have mercy on them. R. Have mercy on them, O Lord.
O most sweet Jesus, through the immense pain which You suffered in breathing forth Your Blessed Soul, have mercy on them. R. Have mercy on them, O Lord.
Closing Prayer
Blessed Souls, I have prayed for you; I entreat you, who are so dear to God, and who are secure of never losing Him, to pray for me, a miserable sinner, who is in danger of being damned and of losing God forever. Amen.
De Profundis (Psalm 130)
Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice. Let Your ears be attentive to my voice in supplication.
If You, O Lord, mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand? But with You is forgiveness, that You may be revered.
I trust in the Lord; my soul trusts in His word. My soul waits for the Lord more than sentinels wait for the dawn.
More than sentinels wait for the dawn, let Israel wait for the Lord. For with the Lord is kindness and with Him is plenteous redemption. And He will redeem Israel from all their iniquities.
V. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. R. And let perpetual light shine upon them.
V. May they rest in peace. R. Amen.

For Time to Repent
Amen.
Meditation
Consider how often you have deserved to be in that state of painful punishment. Consider the souls who died unprepared, without the sacraments, or with sins unconfessed. Some of them were younger and healthier than you, yet death came to them suddenly.
Give thanks to God that He has spared you and given you time to repent. Use this time wisely to make amends for your sins.
Prayer
O Lord, I thank You for Your patience with me. I have sinned many times, yet You have not struck me down. You have given me time to repent and do penance.
I pray for the souls in Purgatory who did not have sufficient time to make amends. Through Your mercy and through my prayers, grant them relief from their sufferings. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. Amen.

For Perseverance in Grace
Amen.
Meditation
Consider how the souls in Purgatory see clearly the guilt of their sins and the offenses they committed against God. They now understand the malice of even the smallest sin. This vision causes them great grief, more painful than any physical suffering.
May we learn from them to hate sin now, while we still have time to avoid it and do penance.
Prayer
O Lord, grant me the grace to see my sins as You see them, that I may detest them and do penance. Help me to persevere in Your grace until the end of my life.
I pray for the souls in Purgatory, that the fire of Your love may purify them quickly and bring them to the joy of heaven. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

For Those Who Offended God
Amen.
Meditation
Consider that the souls in Purgatory suffer an intense longing for God. They know that He alone can satisfy their deepest desires, yet they cannot reach Him until their purification is complete. This spiritual thirst is more painful than any bodily torment.
They now regret every moment they spent apart from God, every sin that delayed their entrance into heaven.
Prayer
O Lord, increase in me the desire for You. Help me not to waste time on things that do not lead to You. May I always choose You above all else.
I offer my prayers and sacrifices for the souls in Purgatory, especially for those who loved You most on earth but who still await purification. Bring them quickly to Your presence. Amen.

For Fear of Eternal Damnation
Amen.
Meditation
Consider the horror of eternal damnation—to be separated from God forever, to suffer without hope, without end. The souls in Purgatory have escaped this terrible fate, but they remember how close they came.
Let us fear hell and avoid sin, which alone can lead us there. But let us also trust in God's mercy, which saves us from what we deserve.
Prayer
O Lord, deliver me from the pains of hell. Grant me a holy fear of sin and a tender love for You. May I never be separated from You by mortal sin.
I pray for the souls in Purgatory, who are now safe from hell but still suffer. Through Your compassion, shorten their time of purification and bring them home to heaven. Amen.

Amen.

For Gratitude for Christ's Sacrifice
Amen.
Meditation
Consider the ingratitude of sinning against a God who has done so much for us. Jesus suffered and died to save us from our sins. Yet we continue to offend Him by our sins, as if His sacrifice meant nothing.
The souls in Purgatory now see clearly the price Christ paid for their salvation. They are overwhelmed with gratitude and sorrow for having failed to respond adequately to such love.
Prayer
O Lord Jesus, I thank You for dying on the Cross for my sins. I am sorry for my ingratitude. Help me to respond to Your love with love, to Your sacrifice with sacrifice.
Through the merits of Your Passion, I pray for the souls in Purgatory. Apply to them the infinite value of Your Blood, that they may be cleansed and enter into Your glory. Amen.

Our Father
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Meditation
Consider that you have been spared from hell not because of your own merit, but solely because of God's grace. Many who were holier than you have fallen; many who were younger have died unprepared. Yet God has preserved you and given you every opportunity for salvation.
Do not presume on this grace. Use it wisely while you still have time.
Prayer
O Lord, I acknowledge that I have been spared only by Your mercy. I have done nothing to deserve Your grace, yet You continue to give it freely.
I pray for the souls in Purgatory, that Your mercy may shorten their sufferings. And I pray for myself, that I may use well the grace You give me each day. Amen.
